Nearly half of adults in the United States (108 million, or 45%) have high blood pressure. But only half of those people have their condition under control.
Many people develop high blood pressure when they are in their late 30’s or early 40’s, and it occurs more frequently as people age. And because of the obesity epidemic, more and more children are also developing high blood pressure.

Early detection of high blood pressure is very important. Often referred to as the “silent killer” because it may show no symptoms, high blood pressure puts you at an increased risk for heart disease, heart failure, and stroke, among other things. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2018, more than 494,000 deaths in the United States included high blood pressure as a primary or contributing cause.

Beets rarely rank high on anyone's list of most-loved vegetables. But here's a reason to give these ruby-red roots another try: beet juice, beetroot supplements, and certain green leafy vegetables help boost your body’s production of Nitric Oxide (N-O), which can help lower blood pressure, according to a study in the February 2015 edition of Hypertension.
Beets contain naturally high levels of nitrates, which your digestive system converts into nitric oxide. This compound relaxes and widens blood vessels, which, in turn, lowers blood pressure.
The study included 68 people with high blood pressure randomly assigned to drink about a cup of regular beet juice or a nitrate-free beet juice (the placebo) every day for four weeks. Blood pressure readings fell by an average of 7.7 systolic and 2.4 diastolic points in the people who drank regular beet juice, compared with no blood pressure changes in those in the placebo group.
