High Blood Pressure- The Silent Killer
Experts say 80% of strokes can be prevented. The single best way to do that is to get your blood pressure in the healthy range. That means lower than 120/80.
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵?
If your blood pressure is consistently 130/80 or higher, you have hypertension.
Your top number is your systolic pressure, which is the pressure on your arteries when your heart is pumping blood. The lower number, or diastolic pressure, is the pressure in between beats, or when your heart is at rest.
Hypertension puts your arteries under constant stress. As with a tire that’s been overpumped, too much force inside your blood vessels damages the artery walls and makes them weaker.
In almost 9 out of 10 cases, you have a stroke because something, usually a clot, blocks the flow of blood to the brain. Doctors call this an ischemic stroke. The clots happen more often with high blood pressure because it speeds up arteriosclerosis, a condition that makes your arteries get harder, narrower, and clogged with fatty plaque.
High blood pressure also makes you more likely to have atrial fibrillation. It causes blood to collect in the heart, where a clot can form. AFib is very dangerous because it raises your chances of stroke FIVEFOLD!
Strokes are also caused by bleeding in or around the brain. These are “hemorrhagic” strokes. They tend to be more serious and deadlier than clot-based ones. A weak blood vessel breaks open, usually because of an aneurysm, a spot that has ballooned up from pressure. High blood pressure damages arteries and makes them more likely to tear or burst.

Many of you know I have Stage 5 kidney failure. I first realized I had kidney failure when I was hospitalized 6 years ago with unusual water retention and fatigue. After 6 weeks in the hospital, 2 weeks in a medically induced coma, and emergency dialysis, I learned my life was changed forever. I needed a kidney transplant to live a normal life. In the meantime, I would require being hooked up to a dialysis machine for 4 hours, 3 times per week, just to stay alive.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝘆 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲?
Well, it wasn’t just one thing but the main cause was uncontrolled high blood pressure. Constant high blood pressure is one of the main causes of kidney failure. I had a high stress job managing my investment firm, I drank too much alcohol, I dabbled in drugs, and I was a social smoker— The perfect combination of ingredients for high blood pressure.
And like many men, I never went to the doctor. I figured I had everything under control. I knew I had high blood pressure but it wasn’t THAT high so I simply ignored it. To call me stupid would be an understatement.
When my good friend and partner, Todd Mitchell, and I started Super Anti-Aging Nutrition, I was excited to bring to market nutritional supplements that could improve people’s health and help alleviate some of the health issues so many of us suffer from, particularly as we get older.
High blood pressure (hypertension) was number 1 on my list. So many people suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure and unfortunately the medical profession is flawed in how it addresses this and so many other ailments.
The entire medical profession is designed to put bandaids on symptoms. Most drugs aren’t cures, they’re just bandaids. Show a doctor a symptom and they’ll prescribe a pill for it. Herein lies the problem— if you want to cure the ailment, you need to eliminate the root cause. While a good doctor may suggest lifestyle changes, many simply prescribe pills.
Ask your doctor how well educated he or she his on eastern medicine and herbal remedies and most will laugh at the question. “That’s not REAL medicine!,” they’ll tell you.
To that, I say BULLSH**!
Food is medicine and any doctor that disputes that has their head buried in the sand(1). When I was first diagnosed with kidney failure, I was put on a renal diet that INCLUDED highly processed foods such as refined white flour, and white rice and EXCLUDED foods such as wheat, brown rice, seeds, dairy, and all potassium rich foods such as beets, avocado, banana, kale, spinach, nuts and beans.
Now I’m not going to argue that there aren’t justifiable medical reasons behind these kidney failure dietary recommendations but, as a whole, I’ve learned that the recommended renal diet is archaic. I eat ALL of those EXCLUDED foods and I’m currently in the best shape of my life despite all the statistics that told me I’d be dead by now.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲?
Because of proper, balanced nutrition and exercise and VERY CAREFUL monitoring of my monthly lab results. I had to become my own best health advocate by researching and understanding kidney disease and learning what all of my monthly lab results actually meant. I learned the hard way that despite my doctors best intentions, most of them were just going through the motions, telling patients the same crap the profession has been telling patients since the creation of dialysis back in the 1940’s. It’s important to note that in the past 5 years the National Kidney Foundation has finally changed their tune on the renal diet to start including many of the off-limits healthy foods they had been telling patients to avoid.
